Connecting With Ria And Anna From Afar

We have been collaborating with sound artists Anna Lebzeit and Ria Soemardjo since Ria travelled with us to Bali and Kalimantan in 2018 and then Anna and Ria both joined us in a SMOKE residency at Bundanon in 2019. Unfortunately, we were unable to travel as previously planned to Melbourne to fulfil a creative development with these artists. We have continued connecting with them via zoom, and sending video and sound files to each other. Development of sound beds is our future focus. One experiment includes a clay drum crafted by Ria in the shape of a lung, immersed in water and sound recording the decay of the instrument until clay materials fully dissolved. This data will be treated by Anna into different sound waves and then crafted into a cinematic like score. The SMOKE sound ideas produced and developed thus far continue to support our creative process. We are looking forward to engaging in a face-to-face SMOKE sound CD with Anna and Ria during 2022.
